Hello, my name is Cathy, sign name. I am hearing. I grew up in the hearing world, I talked with people, it was all very normal. Life went on quite normally.
In my family I have an aunty and uncle who are Deaf. I thought I would learn sign language and I carried on learning over time. Then recently I did Deaf Studies at Victoria University. I met more people from the Deaf community.
Oh, then we started to study Deaf identity. Oh wow! I realised I’m hearing! I’m hearing! I didn’t know that. Ah, my identity is as a hearing person. Wow, there you go.
