Hello, my name is Jennifer Brain. When I first realised I was Deaf – really, I was 7. I was in a hearing school, in the mainstream. My teacher made all the children in the class take turns to shout into my ear, to repeat what she said straight into my ear. That made me feel different from them. I was not happy.
So, my mother took me out of there and put me in the Deaf school. That was good for my identity and my mental health. I realised I had other Deaf people around, plenty of them.
