Deaf Identity

 

Your identity is about you knowing who you are, what you value/treasure/whats important to you.

It is how you see yourself and how you think the world looks at you.

Deaf people say they have a Deaf identity. They say they are Deaf, they are happy to be Deaf. They use sign language and feel connected with other Deaf people.

The World Federation of the Deaf say it is our right to have a Deaf Identity. WFD says it Identifies deaf people as belonging to a cultural and linguistic community who use sign language as mother tongue or as a natural language to communicate.

People often have more than one identity. M?ori, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, etc.
