Sign Language is the language Deaf people use to communicate. It is a visual language with grammar, for example hand shapes, palm orientation, non manual signals etc. and it has evolved over time (example of an old/new sign?).
We can share stories, tell jokes, share information, raise our children, talk about religion and politics, be happy and sad.
We raise children with sign language, we learn and teach with sign language. We also fight and love with sign language.
Best of all, New Zealand Sign Language is ours! It grew and evolved from the New Zealand Deaf community and is our unique language.
